2021-10-16: Successful Chilliwack September Classroom Training Event

We are pleased to report that the September Training Event was successful and we extend our many thanks to the attendees and presenters both.

We welcome and encourage feedback from attendees so that we can continue to develop training to meet the needs of the membership and look forward to presenting further opportunities soon.

2021-01-14: Message from Incoming President, Glenn Danks of The North Vancouver City Fire Department (NVCFD)

Thanks for visiting our website, the fact that you are reading these words indicates that the IAAI vision to “serve as the global resource for those working in and associated with the fire, arson, and explosion investigation” holds value for you. 2021 promises a big increase in networking opportunities for us all, and the BC Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators plans to do our part in providing face to face training for our members and friends, when possible.

Over the last couple of years, I have been managing our memberships and it has been a great way to stay in touch with our many fire investigation experts province-wide. I know from these conversations that there is an even greater need for training this year because of last year’s isolation restrictions, so we will be setting up for our regular 4 or 5 day hands-on fire investigation training sometime around September. Please keep checking our website for new info as we navigate the Provincial regulations that will determine the success of this event.

Fire Investigation is and always has been a field where information sharing helps us all. There are many areas where we can benefit from more testing, validating and exploring the effects of fire. Anyone who is involved in these types of pursuits is encouraged to contact us, we would love to assist where we can or have you present your findings to our members.

One real benefit of becoming a member of the BC Chapter of IAAI is networking. We have members from diverse entities including the RCMP, Private Fire Investigation Companies, Engineering Firms, Insurance Companies and Fire Departments. At fire scenes, we often work in silos; at our events we get to work together and share.

I look forward to see your faces, both familiar and new, at whatever events we are able to present in 2021. See you there!

Glenn Danks

COVID-19 Response

2020-06-02 Update: The BC-IAAI regrets to inform that we have cancelled our Major Training Event, Previously scheduled for September 21st – 25th.

2020-03-17: letter from our [then] President, Christopher J. Reed, MSc. Eng. (Fire), P.Eng.:

Dear members of Chapter 15,

The BC Chapter 15 executive recognizes that with the constantly changing COVID-19 situation around the world, this is an unprecedented time for everyone — a time that, for many, is filled with uncertainty, frustration, and concern. Our hearts and thoughts go out to each and every one of you and your friends and families.

Considering the most recent news and announcements from the World Health Organization (WHO), Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and local and federal governments, the executive has cancelled monthly director meetings and instead will be conducting conference call meetings and email / phone correspondence only until further notice.

Regrettably, we are postponing the May 8, 2020 IAAI Spring Seminar Dealing With Fire Investigation Involving Fatalities that was to be held in Penticton, BC on May 8, 2020. We will continue to evaluate the opportunity to host this seminar at another date.

Many of our members are front line first responders while others are required to travel to fire scenes and coordinate with the public, contractors, witnesses, and other emergency services. As with every fire scene and evidence examination, the IAAI encourages appropriate NFPA and WSBC health and safety protocols. Please follow your department guidelines and direction from local authorities to do our part and promote protective measures and appropriate social distancing where possible.

Please be safe and stay healthy.

-Christopher J. Reed, MSc. Eng. (Fire), P.Eng.
